Text Box: 2007 Chaddick Award Winners Emphasize Vision, Relationship-Building
The applications we received for this year’s Chaddick Development Control award exemplified the wide range of efforts underway in our region to promote effective planning and zoning. After several weeks of deliberation, our team made site visits to five communities and completed more than a dozen intensive interviews.  Two applications  rose to the top, while several others earned honorable mention awards
Lake County earned the first-place award in the Vision category for the work of the Route 173 Corridor Council, a multi-jurisdictional body intended to shape future development around the I-94 interchange at Rt. 173. The Village of Orland Park earned a first-place award in the Process category for its design review process. The Village of Bartlett and The Village of Montgomery earned honorable mention awards for their work with commercial sign ordinances and naturalized storm detention basins, respectively. Congratulations to all!

Text Box: High School Program Kicks into High Gear, Receives coverage in the Chicago Reader
The Chaddick Institute’s innovative program for high school students has crossed several milestones this summer.  After spending several months teaching basic planning principles to students in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, we arranged for these talented youngsters to make formal presentations to a panel of experts that included representatives from Bethel New Life and the West Madison Task Force.  “Our students really rose to the occasion and demonstrated a strong understanding of planning and development in their neighborhood,” observed program director Joe Kearney.
This evening event in late May was the latest in the series of activities that were part of our “Leading Community Change” (LCC) program. Students from four CPS high schools on the West Side learned about urban planning and studied the results of more than 500 surveys completed  by other students in their schools.“ The survey helped LCC participants understand the importance of public participation in neighborhood planning, which is often overlooked in the schools,” said Kearney. “At the same time, it offered members of the Task Force a youth perspective on key neighborhood issues.”
This summer’s program has also included a week-long session with the Big Picture High School in the Back-of-the-Yards neighborhood. That program was featured in the July 13 version of the Chicago Reader newspaper. An online version is available at:
