Joseph P. Schwieterman, Ph.D., is director of the Chaddick Institute for
Metropolitan Development and professor of public service management at
DePaul University. Prof. Schwieterman is well-known authority on
transportation and land-use planning in the region and is the author of the
book, Shaping Contemporary Suburbia: Perspectives on Development Control
in Metropolitan Chicago. Schwieterman is a regular guest on WTTW's
Chicago Tonight Program and WBBM's Noon Business Hour and has testified on
air transportation before a subcommittee of the U.S. Congress.
Schwieterman has a master's degree in transportation from Northwestern
University, a Ph.D. in Public Policy Studies from the University of Chicago,
and professional experience in the airline industry. Over the past ten
years, he has become a nationally known specialist on the link between
transportation systems and urban economies.
In
2001, he completed a major study on railroad grade-crossing safety for
Senator Richard Durbin. His more recent publications include an assessment
of our region's transportation capacity, which will appear as a chapter in a
soon-to-be released compendium by Temple University Press, and the book
The Politics of Place: A History of Zoning in Chicago, which will be
published by Lake Claremont Press this autumn.
In
2003, Schwieterman’s technical article "Abandoned Corridors," which explores
the potential reuse of out-of-service rail lines, was a finalist for the
prestigious David P. Morgan Award for excellence in railroad research, an
award sponsored by the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. This year,
his book, When the Railroad Leaves Town: American Communities in the Age
of Rail Line Abandonment,” published by Missouri’s Truman State
University Press, was nominated for the society’s George and Constance
Hilton Book Award.
Since joining the faculty
at DePaul University in 1991, Schwieterman has developed classes on economic
development, advanced quantitative methods, and community analysis as well
as hosted the Chaddick Institute's workshops on planning and development
topics. Under Schwieterman's direction in 2001, the Institute received a
public education award from the Illinois Chapter of the American Planning
Association for its workshop series. Schwieterman also serves as an advisor
to a variety of organizations, including the Federal Aviation Administration
and the Midwest High Speed Rail Association. |
