Dr. Shackel has had a long career in Historical Archaeology and has written extensively on the importance of engaging many public audiences in the practice of the discipline. Most recently, Dr. Shackel has been working in southern Illinois at the site of New Philadelphia: the town founded by free blacks in the United States. His work there engages contemporary residents of the region and descendant communities.

To prepare for Dr. Shackel’s address, all conference participants will receive and read a copy of his and Barbara Little's recent book: Archaeology as a Tool of Civic Engagement (2007, Alta Mira Press). His keynote address will combine his work on public archaeology and his recent research at New Philadelphia, and will be followed by an open discussion of all conference participants.
