The Politics, Institutions and Values
Concentration investigates the public dimensions of American civilization.
It focuses upon the institutions and social processes which constitute
its organizational framework, shape its functional distribution
of power and resources, and provide the cultural meanings and legitimations
for its operation. Among the institutions and processes explored
are the political system, economy, education, social realm, and
cultural spheres. The dynamic relations among these realms are explored
from a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary orientations.
An historical perspective is employed to trace the interplay of
social groups and subcultures as they shape and are shaped by these
sectors over time. This perspective is also used to compare traditional,
modern, and contemporary methodologies for conceptualizing American
society. Finally, a critical perspective suggests the conflicts
among these institutions and processes, among their diverse participants,
between ruling elites and both members and outsiders, and between
the official discourses and the complex real outcomes.
Other courses in the schedule, sometimes under "Topics"
headings, may also meet the U.S. subject matter criterion to count
toward American Studies. If you see a course that you're interested
in which is not on these lists, consult the Director of the American
Studies Program about applying it to your concentration. Students
may take an unlimited number of AMS 395: Topics in American Studies,
as long as the topics of each course are different. Top
