AMS 300: Domestic Studies
Domestic Studies courses offer students and
faculty the opportunity for intense study of a well-defined
topic and for the direct experience through travel of the
topic's sites, material culture, and more. Prepared
through class sessions and prior reading, domestic studies
travelers gain hands on and behind the scenes experiences
and quot;get up close and personal" with historical objects
and places. The combination of classroom work, travel,
study, and reflection allows us to consider how Americans
understand and use their history.
Small
groups of students and (usually) two faculty learning and
traveling together allow for an experience that one domestic
studies student described as "the best." The
travel portion is generally during breaks--December, spring
break, or summer sessions--so that students can take a travel
course without disrupting their registration for other courses
during the quarter or other plans/jobs, etc. Travel is usually
by plane, with local travel in vans or by public transportation;
students stay in hotels during the trip.
Most Domestic Studies experiences carry 8 hours
credit (2 courses); all satisfy the liberal studies program's
experiential learning requirement and require no prerequisites.
