Parodontidae - Saccodon wagneri Kner 1863

SOURCE FOR OCCURRENCE IN ECUADOR: Eigenmann (1922), Fowler (1958); Roberts (1974); Glodek (1978); Barriga (1991), Laaz et al. (2009).
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Kner, R. 1863. Eine Uebersicht der ichthyologischen Ausbeute des Herrn Professors Dr. Mor. Wagner in Central-Amerika. Sitzungsberichte der Koningl. Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, München 2:220-230.
TYPE SPECIMENS:
TAXONOMIC STATUS: Valid (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2012). Roberts (1974) noted that Apareiodon ecuadoriensis is a synonym of S. wagneri.
RANGE ECUADOR: Guayas River drainage and possibly other parts of western slope of Ecuador (Eigenmann, 1922; Roberts, 1974).
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: None.
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR:
MAXIMUM SIZE: 15 cm total length (Laaz et al., 2009).
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Head relatively small, mouth inferior, snout extending anteriorly over mouth, skull without fontanel, lateral line complete, adipose fin present, pectoral fins large, fan-like, caudal fin forked, dorsal fin with 12 rays, anal fin with 9-11 rays, lateral line with 39-41 scales (Glodek, 1978). Teeth are highly specialized for feeding on algae and there is substantial polymorphism of dentition (Roberts, 1974). Roberts (1974) noted that color varies with age. Juveniles tend to have midlateral longitudinal line extending the length of the body and often continuing on to the caudal fin. This line is straddled by a series of eight to ten dark blotches. In larger specimens, this pattern tends to be obscured by an overall darkening of the body. Most specimens have a dark black mark on the tip of the adipose fin (Roberts, 1974).
ECOLOGY: Species adapted to life in fast flowing rivers with rock or cobble bottoms that are close to mountains and generally above 100m in altitude (Roberts, 1974). Often form tightly grouped schools when swimming in rapid flowing water (Glodek, 1978). Feed on algae attached to rocks (Roberts, 1974; Laaz et al., 2009).
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: NA.
CONSERVATION STATUS: NA, although this species appears to be common in the area (Laaz et al., 2009).
