TYPE SPECIMENS:
TAXONOMIC STATUS: Valid (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2011). However, in a recent morphometric study of the species, Roman-Valencia et al. (2011) indicate that B. peruanus in western ecuador differed significantly from Peruvian populations and may represent a new, undescribed species.
RANGE ECUADOR: Western slope of Ecuador (Eigenmann, 1922).
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: Western slope of Peru (Eigenmann, 1929).
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR:
MAXIMUM SIZE: 12.5 cm (Eigenmann, 1929).
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Bryconamericus peruanus differs from other species by the following combination of characters: Head and anterior part of body heavy, tapering from near the pectoral to the caudal peduncle or more regularly elliptical; profile from the lip of the occipital to the nares steep and nearly straight, sharply decurved in front of the nares, preventral area rounded (Eigenmann, 1929). Anal fin rays 25-27; lateral line scales, 37-38; head length in SL, 3.31-3.61 (Glodek, 1978).
ECOLOGY: Bryconamericus peruanus is known in Ecuador as the “sardina”. It is a small, ecologically important, omnivorous characid (Barriga, 1994).
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: This species is not exploited as a food fish because of its small size.
CONSERVATION STATUS: NA, although the species is not directly exploited as a food species and appears to be common in the region.
