Topic:

Introducing Scientists and Inventors

 

Objectives:  

  • To critically analyze photographs and their meanings. 
  • To compare concept of science and scientists throughout time. 
  • To articulate and discuss how and why science has changed over time.
 

Procedure: 

  1. Through a Power Point presentation, students will examine these two photographs. 
  2. The teacher will display the first photograph (the photo of a scientist from long ago).
  3. Students will create a list of qualities that they can recognize from the picture.  [Possible observations might be use of microscope, typewriter, style of dress] 
  4. Students will create another list after viewing the second photograph.  [Possible observation might be use of more advanced technology] 
  5. Teacher will pose the question, "How are these two photographs different and alike?"
  6. With a partner they will have a conversation about the question that was presented.  [They will be comparing and contrasting the idea of scientist as he/she has evolved through history]
  7. In their Science journals, they will record observations and ideas they have discussed.
  8. The whole class will come together and talk about comparisons the students have made.

 

Assessment: 

Each student will be responsible for writing a one page creative story describing a day in the life of each scientist.
