Creature

Music and words by Steve Vining and Victoria Vining

Here comes the light
Fear, find a place out of sight
Your heart will tell you where to go
Trust, you'll feel it, you will know

Fly straight out of this cave
Before you perish
You know this could be you your grave
Leaving behind all you cherish
End the drama, stop it still
Use your will

Creature, Oh but your senses have gone astray
Little one, looks like you've come here and lost your way

Cold, in a world like steel
Sold, you will lose in this deal
You've made the choice to be here
Choose again, be rid of the fear

Your sky has fallen to the ground
A trip taken out of turn
The star is spinning round and round
Oh what a lesson to learn
See the sun, get away
Will this be your last day?

Creature, In just a moment you could lose your soul
Little one, in the blink of an eye you could end your role

Time has called its card
Climb, it won't be hard
Life is just starting for you
Don't give up, what you know to be true

Creature, I'll always be there till the very end
Little one, ever quicker with every message you send

Creature, you know I'll be with you, I will be your guide
Little one, you know that I'll always be at your side

Brad Goode: trumpet
Danny Gottlieb: drums
Craig McCreary: guitar (rhythm)
Chris Siebold: guitar (lead solo)
Steve Vining: bass, french horn, keyboards, percussion, trumpet, vocals

This song was inspired by a bat trapped in an underground parking garage

The Journey

Music and words by Steve Vining

Looks as though he's reading, as he falls asleep
Checked all his appointments, nothing left to keep
Didn't seem to notice that others on the train are sleeping too
Does he care, why they're there or what they do?

She is also reading, a novel of true love
Nothing can distract her now from what she's thinking of
Life just passes by her, as one by one the people disappear
Does she care why they're there or where they go from here?

Gently moving, swaying, giving, on every passing tie
Hours pass like minutes while we dream
Gone without a notice paid
The moments flash and then they fade
On the track of time where this day will die

Time moves on
The way just keeps on winding
We ride along
And the years begin to wane
This road we're on
Can make our days all pass and seem the same

Night is falling, cloaking, reaching inside the lighted car
Through darkness shines a light to show the way
So many who have come have gone
Their journey ended, life is done
Seemed they had an instant to come so far

Time moves on
Some days it passes slowly
The constant flow
Can lull you fast asleep
Roughened road
Will it wake you before your turn to leave

Life moves on
All arrive at different places
And who they are
We never really know
Why they're there?
By the time we start to learn it's time to go

Dave Bernat: drums
Rob Berry: keyboards
Ernie Denov: guitar
Josie Falbo: background vocals
Steve Vining: bass, keyboard, percussion, vocals

The Risk of Love

Music and words by Steve Vining

Here is a man who let time go by
Taking no risk in his life, as he lived, he died
His life was so calculated, so prearranged
Built his house with concrete walls, and nothing would change

Here's the one girl in his life who could make him care
He'd never seen anyone like her anywhere
She was so full of love and so full of life
And he could either let her go or make her his wife

Will you take the risk of love?
In a future you're so uncertain of
Will you take a chance and lose it all?
Will you take the risk of love?
You know you could get hurt
And life can change so fast
You want your love to last
But you never know
The risk of love

Now he's alone again, he likes being free
Safe from the loss he would suffer if she would leave
Complete control destroying what he could have saved
Now he'll have to live without her, and the love that she gave

You want your love to last forever
You wonder how long it will grow
If you don't take the chance
You'll never know

Will you take the risk of love...

Choose Life

Music and words by Steve Vining

This is no accident, this is no mistake
You can hear the voice that's calling you
There's an ocean raging at your feet
Of tears from all the sadness gone before
Now you're adding more

A feeling can make you uncertain
And distraction can cause you to choose
The things that have taken the happiness
That you thought that you could not lose
You're making your decisions constantly
With each thought and each passing breath
Gliding on the cutting edge of life
On the cutting edge of death

Choose Life

Nothing will happen, that is not planned
Everything you hear, everything you see
Every movement in time and space, everything at rest
Strange as it may seem, it was meant to be
Now the mystery…

The answers are laid out before you
Yet the questions are all that you see
You curse at the lock and you kick at the door
Not admitting that you hold the key
You look at your map as you chart your course
You choose the signs that you will believe
Wisdom is given to those who ask
Affecting each thought they conceive

Choose Life

Like a star guiding ships on a moonless night
Through the darkness above and below
A glimmer of hope can now make things right
In a moment of truth you will know
The happiness you were meant to feel
A comforting peace deep within
It takes one decision to make it real
To not end now but begin

Choose Life

Corner Thrift Store

Music and words by Steve Vining and Victoria Vining

Picture frames that hold a shot
Torn edges, smiling faces
The eyes that tell a lot
They're on the shelf waiting for places
Next to the glasses and books beginning to rot

Sixty cents, perhaps a dollar
They're second had now you know
The old dreams, the lost years
With nothing new to show
The corner thrift store where the memories holler
And you can reap what you didn't sow

Shuffling feet struggle in need
Hunting through the crowded aisles
Among the others filled with greed
Side by side through dirty piles
It's a collectors chance to feed

Sixty cents...

Endings have a chance for a new beginning
With imagination, this will do for that
A dress too big, a sister pinning
A reddened feather can make a hat
A ragged cat that's soft to feel
A broken cup, but not a saucer
A sorry bike without its wheel
A story tells of how he lost her
And a withered man who tries to steal

There they hang, bargains with names
Slightly faded, worn out labels
Turn your head and you'll lose the game
Lay them on the checkout table
There is a price for finding fame

Sixty cents, perhaps a dollar
They’re second hand now, you know
Young dreams, with high hopes
For what tomorrow will show
The corner thrift store where the memories holler
And you can reap what you didn't sow

Take Me With You

Music and words by Steve Vining

Looking out my window, all of life is passing by
Pink and blue the colors floating in the morning sky
And there beyond the trees I see forever on the lake
I close my eyes and pray to God my spirit he will take

Take me with you I want to fly away
There's so many friends I'd like to see today
I know that with you is where I want to stay
Take me with you

I hear the city sounds among the crashing of the waves
What kind of sounds will fill my ears the remainder of my days?
And will I hear beyond this world, when I have to go?
I now can only speculate, but one day I will know

Take me with you I want to fly away
I know that with you is where I want to stay
You've shown me so much here along the way
Take me with you

The sun is coming out now rising high above the site
The wind is blowing softly as the darkness turns to light
I see the moments passing and I often question why
Yet knowing deep down in my heart my soul will never die

Take me with you I want to fly away
You've shown me so much here along the way
Bring me closer to you every day
Take me with you

I Don't Want to See You Anymore

Music and words by Steve Vining

I don't want to see you anymore

I close my eyes and try to hide the tears
So sad, so sad to see you walk away alone
Not believing I could turn and you'd be gone
And years of being happy are just a memory now
Could we make it somehow could you say?

I don't want to see you anymore

I close my eyes and try to hide the fear
So sad, so sad to think I'd let you walk away
Wondering if there's something I could say to keep you here
To keep you from the sadness and the pain
Are we trying in vain?

I don't want to see you anymore

Love has always helped us find a way
So sad, so sad to see how blind that we could be
I could never leave you when you give your heart to me
I wish that I could get you to come back to me somehow
We could be together now
How could you say...

I don't want to see you anymore

The Traveler

Music and words by Steve Vining and Victoria Vining

Don't know how he makes it brother
He just drags along
Said one watcher to the other
As the wanderer sang his song

All got up and ready to go
He files a crooked nail
And checks his face in a store window
And believes his luck can't fail

I'm sure I couldn't know or say
Why he mutters that tune
Said one keeper of the way
As onward scuffed the lune

All got up...

Step aside, he'll soon pass by
I don't want him brushing by me
Worried one with fear and widened eye
That the traveler did not see

There he goes, he's going, gone
Be glad we're not like that
Mused the preeners on the lawn
Who blessed their name of cat

Fragile

Music and words by Steve Vining and Victoria Vining

I feel the line has just been drawn
The plan lies crushed and broken
I'm not a king, I'm just a pawn
Holding nothing but a token
In the darkness before the dawn

I said,
I'm fairly fragile
But I'm not a whisper
I'm a crashing wave upon the sea
I'm fairly fragile
Disappearing within the water
Losing sight of the heart of me

New faces appear before me
Words flowing from their minds
They're telling me what I must see
Unveiling secrets I should find
And a reason for me to be

I said...

Suddenly the voice came alive
Within an endless sound
It had no point home to drive
But it showed me what it had found
In a place where I could arrive

I said...

We're very much the same we two
We’re brothers of the soul
The difference is, his life was through
He’d finally reached his goal

I said...

I Want You

Music and words by Steve Vining

I know I really love you
So why do I refuse to say the words
That they may change everything we know?
Can this love last forever?
And if we're together for the way
Will our love fade or will it grow?

It's time to let go of our fear
Look how we've made it all these years

I want you
Let's start a family
How much of a risk can it be?
We’ve waited so long
This love will last forever with you and me

What would I do without you?
No one could ever take your place
Our love grows stronger every day
And I will never leave you
Even though we in time will change
With you is where I want to stay

I have loved you from the start
And time or pain won't change my heart

I want you
Let's start a family
How much of a risk can it be?
Love’s light will guide us
This love will last forever with you and me

And through our love our lives will share
This new life that our love may bear

I want you
Let’s start a family
How much of a risk can it be?
I’ll always love you
This love will last forever with you and me

I want you
Let’s start a family
How much of a risk can it be?
We have each other
This love will last forever with you and me

Free Will

Music and words by Steve Vining and Victoria Vining

Narrow circles widen reaching out to grow a distance
But then others push beyond
Careless little choices made today will lead to bigger
Like the ripples in a pond
Endless roads stretch out to tease the weary soul
Which way to choose and how to reach the goal
None will reach their destination
Till traveling on a course
Along the way we plan and move by our decisions
Not by force

Free will

Another restless night for one who not that long ago
Had only simple turns to make
But no rules bragged the sign and risky chances for the fearless
Are just pleasures that they take
Broken glass can shine like diamonds in the sun
But truth’s a light from which no one can run
Step by step he walked each day to darkness and despair
Not arriving in one leap into this hopeless disrepair

He thought about the future of his unforgotten dreams
And sifting through his soul he found real isn’t what it seemed
She wondered where her life would lead, which way to cast her lot
Praying she could change what she’d been told that she could not

Free will

The steps you’re taking on this day
Will chart your couse and lead your way
With your free will you can choose
In life it’s all you truly have to use

Free will

All the thoughts you take within
Become habit even sin
Guard your senses and your heart
And then be courageous from the start

We must all try to discern
What lessons life asks us to learn
Keep within the moral code
And always seek to find the higher road

Make the choice for what is right
Fill your mind with truth and light
Each one must pay a final toll
Because we have just one eternal soul
