Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of bodies of the United Nations. Participants play the role of diplomats representing a country in debates and negotiations toward the drafting, amending, and passage of resolutions stating global policy on the whole range of international problems facing humanity. By researching these issues and their country, students learn about the problems from the perspective of other people. By participating in the deliberations with students representing many different countries, students learn about the diversity of national perspectives.
The Society for International Affairs strives to create a forum that fosters the debate and discussion of relevant international affairs issues. Speakers from various different fields will come to offer a conversation about an issue they specialize in. Through diplomacy and negotiation, participants seek out solutions to complex global concerns such as the environment, economic development, refugees, humanitarian disasters, disease and healthcare, conflict resolution, disarmament, and human rights.
Participation in Model United Nations has a number of benefits. Students who take the experience seriously learn a great deal about international affairs. They develop sophisticated library and internet research skills. They hone their analytical and critical thinking skills and sharpen their writing abilities. Many of our students who have gone on to graduate school, law school, or a career in the Foreign Service have told us that Model United Nations was among the best educational experiences of their years at DePaul. You do not need to have prior MUN experience to join. The program develops the necessary skills in research analysis, writing, speaking and negotiating skills used in Model United Nations sessions.
Over the course of the year the Society for International Affairs will be planning and organizing many activities that promote the awareness of international affairs on campus. The Society for International Affairs' largest event each year is the attendance of Model United Nations (MUN) conferences.
