DePaul's team takes a realist approach to MUN. Many conferences stress consensus-building or simply creating resolutions (see below) that everyone can agree with. This is not how the United Nations always operates in the real world, especially when discussing the controversial subjects usually discussed at MUN conferences. So, we encourage you to pay attention to your particular state's national interests when conducting research. It might help to look up speeches given by your country's top officials and real United Nations resolutions your state has voted for or against.
It is also important to have a thorough knowledge of the topics of your committee. These can be found on the conference websites. If you are working with a partner, you can divide the work so each person researches just one topic.
The Society for International Affairs strives to create a forum that fosters the debate and discussion of relevant international affairs issues. Speakers from various different fields will come to offer a conversation about an issue they specialize in. Through diplomacy and negotiation, participants seek out solutions to complex global concerns such as the environment, economic development, refugees, humanitarian disasters, disease and healthcare, conflict resolution, disarmament, and human rights.
During conference, you will spend the majority of your time working on resolutions. Resolutions are each committees' formal expression of opinion or a decision. Unless you are in the Security Council, these resolutions are really only recommendations of action to be taken by the international community. However, that does not make them any less important. There is a specific format for resolutions that we will also cover during meetings. You can view a sample resolution co-written by one of our members at MMUN.
