Dr. Murphy is an award-winning teacher, researcher, and a DePaul management professor. He has 
lectured around the world and served as consultant or advisor to over 100 entrepreneurs and firms in Chicago and beyond. He is Chair (2012-2013) of the Management History Division of the Academy of Management and has published over 20 articles in leading scholarly journals.

He is author of Mutiny and Its Bounty: Leadership Lessons from the Age of Discovery, published by Yale University Press in 2013.

His work has been featured in Businessweek, USA Today, US News and World ReportFinancial Times, "Chicago Tonight," and more.  Before academia, he was a small craft engineer in the US Navy and Organizational Development Specialist at the North American headquarters of French multinational Schneider Electric. He speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and is currently leading DePaul's internationalization strategy in the People's Republic of China.

His teaching, research, and other professional academic activities fall into the categories of entrepreneurship, management history, and US-China contexts.
