University Hall power monitoring experiment

Current results

The competition considers the change in power usage from the current week compared to the average of the previous two weeks. Each hour is compared to the same hour (for example, 3-4 pm Monday) in the previous two weeks. If the current power is greater than this average, the result is a negative number. The table at right shows the cummulative savings for the current week (the week starts on Sunday). The first graph shows both the previous and current power usage, while the second graph below shows the savings.

Energy conservation competitions

Based on a proposal written by Marian Vernon, an energy conservation competition was held at University Hall during the fall of 2009.

History of the project

During the fall of 2008, 12 power monitors were installed in DePaul University's residential dorm, University Hall. Each monitor measures one 3-phase electrial panel. University Hall has 4 floors, and there are three electrical panels per floor. The first floor includes a residence, so its power consumption is typically much higher than the other 3 floors. Power measurements are recorded every 15 minutes, and the data is collected by an automated script every hour at 35 minutes past the hour. This page shows the figures generated by the script and also has a link to a PDF file that includes graphs all the data individually. There is also a link to a csv file that can be imported into Excel.
