Possible Measures

1. Increasing the level of goal III activities by expanding the focus and activities of current institutes, centers and projects and by creating new programs.

Develop an action plan that seeks to:

  • create support mechanism (incubator) for those seeking to create new programs
  • develop a start-up grant/revolving loan fund or a similar self-sustaining mechanism for seeding new projects/initiatives
  • encourage faculty participation in educationally-related activities
  • benchmark competitions= partnerships with communities and corporations
  • develop policies and financial performance guidelines for Goal III activities
  • identify, pilot and test new types of activities
  • increase number of current types of activities
  • increase community partnerships that drive these activities
  • increase activities through coordination of efforts among centers, institutes and programs
  • develop a plan to publicize expanded activities

Possible Measures

2. Enriched learning opportunities for students and faculty through curricular integration of community-based learning projects.

Goal I and Goal II are necessary but not sufficient to move DePaul forward. Goal III provides the sufficiency through its synergy with Goal I, Goal II and with the larger community.

The action plan should address:

  • the linkage of service and learning as part of DePaul=s Vincentian Mission
  • the role of Institutes, Centers and Projects for providing students with curricular and co-curricular opportunities for community-based learning
  • infrastructure and staffing necessary to support community-based learning
  • possible linkages with international programs and opportunities
  • financial aid strategies (e.g., LA&S Public Service Scholarships) to enable students to do community-based learning and service learning projects.

Possible Measures

3. Creating an institutional infrastructure that will support the achievement of Goal III.

Develop an action plan which provides a supportive infrastructure that addresses the following needs:

  • to develop evaluative processes that ensure program quality
  • to build awareness and support in the university community for activities related to Goal III
  • to increase involvement of faculty and students in specific programs and projects
  • to offer a flexible human resource plan that supports the accomplishments of Goal III
  • to develop appropriate indirect cost models
  • to develop long-term financial planning for these activities to insure that overall direct costs are covered by external funding and the appropriate indirect costs are covered and, where appropriate, funds are secured for future expansion of efforts
  • to develop an informational data base and a clearing house for all programs and projects in order to facilitate coordination among centers, institutes and programs
  • to incorporate these activities into the planning of the office of advancement, and OSPR.
