IM) jtk (Freenode IRC) Summary of the course This course will cover a range of network protocol implementations and designs, particularly a subset of the TCP/IP protocol suite including, but not limited to IP, IPv6, ICMP, UDP, TCP, DNS, RIP, OSPF/IS-IS and BGP. Time permitting we will also touch on network management with SNMP, IP multicast protocols, SCTP, tunneling, NTP, network applications and other items as interest dictates. While we will focus our attention on the ubiquitous TCP/IP protocol suite, the lectures will be roughly evenly split between protocol basics, design/operational considerations (i.e. why are things the way they are) and real-world case studies. The real-world case studies will draw from the instructor's current and active participation in the Internet operational community. This part of the course will attempt to show how network protocols really do or don't work and offer a rare glimpse from the front lines of security threats (e.g. DDoS attacks, widespread Internet worms , route hijacking), network monitoring and analysis tools (e.g. packet capture parsing, distributed DNS server monitoring, botnet analysis) and network upgrade and enhancement attempts (e.g. implementing CoS/QoS, VoIP, router upgrades, IPv6, IP multicast, DNSSEC, standards and community participation). Additional activities will also incorporate a number of real world exercises including network tool development using popular scripting languages and network system administration exercises presented as bonus challenges. Forouzan, ISBN-13: 978-0073376042 CDM Assigned and Required Book Like many college text books of this sort, it appears written by someone with little operator or real-world implementation experience so there is all sorts of "good stuff" that is missing, but otherwise it seems relatively OK. I'll do my best to fill in some of those missing pieces. Do expect some parts of the homework to come from end-of-chapter questions in this book. You MUST have this book. Students in the past have reported that the "international" paperback edition is approximately 1/3 the cost, but please note, be sure to get the 4th edition. The earlier editions are markedly different. If I could make you buy other books, these would be good ones.
