CALL FOR PAPERS
The 3rd International Student Byron Conference
May 16-24, 2004
Messolonghi Byron Society- Byron Research Center
Honorary President, The Earl of Lytton
Theme: Byron, Romanticism, and the Olympic Spirit

Because Greece is hosting the 2004 Summer Olympics, the Messolonghi
Byron Research Center's third annual conference, to be held May 16-24, 2004,
solicits 20-minute student papers on the topic of Byron, Romanticism, and
the Olympic Spirit.

This broad topic may be construed historically, athletically, ethically,
mythologically, or in a variety of other ways. For example, papers may be
about Byron's relationship to Greece, to the heroic ideal, the theme of
contest, eris, or strife in life, war, sport, and literature, the cult of
excellence, male comradeship, the cult of the spirit in the body, the cult
of sacred place, and the literature of celebration etc. Both graduate and
undergraduate students are welcome to apply. Please e-mail one-paragraph
(approximately 300 words) abstracts to Professor Peter Graham
and to Professor Bernard Beatty by February 5, 2004.

The student papers will be supplemented by lectures by Greek and English
Professors, and the keynote speaker will be Professor Bernard Beatty of
Liverpool University. In keeping with the Olympic Spirit, excursion to
Ancient Olympia as running and swimming athletic competitions will
supplement the academic sessions.

On one day of the conference English-major students from Athens
University and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki will come down with
their professors to join the group. Then and other times, there will be
abundant opportunities to learn about Greek life through first-hand
experience. There will be welcoming ceremonies and receptions hosted by the
Mayor of Messolonghi, the Regional Governor and other Mayors of neighboring
towns, as visits to many historic and archaeological sites and Museums,
associated with Byron. On the first day of the Conference, Monday the 17th, the
group will tour Acropolis and visit other sights in Athens.

A 550-euro conference fee will provide 8 nights of lodging in double
rooms with B/B at an Athens Hotel and H/B (breakfast and lunch) at the
Theoxenia Hotel by the Messolonghi lagoonside, all social events/dinners
with traditional songs and dance, and all excursions. The actual full cost
of the conference is 750 euros; but thanks to Greek sponsors supporting
various activities, the Messolonghi Byron Society will be able to grant each
student a partial subsidy of 200 euros.

Airfare to Greece is additional and should be arranged individually.
Deadline for registration and abstracts: February 5, 2004.
Up to 25 students will be accepted on first-come, first-served basis.
If space is available, students who would like to participate in the
academic and cultural events but do not wish to present papers will be able
to join the Conference.
