Lincoln Park: Neighborhood Schools...Schools for the Neighborhood

Presented by Charles Suchar, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology and Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, DePaul University

This program focused on educational institutions in Lincoln Park both from the broader perspective of educational needs in the urban community to the implementation of educational policy on the local and neighborhood level in the late 20th century.

The former chair of the department of sociology and anthropology, Professor Charles Suchar has been a member of the full-time faculty for thirty years. He received his B.A. degree from DePaul in 1967, his M.A. from Northwestern University in 1968, his Ph.D from Northwestern University in Sociology in 1972, and had a NATO/National Science Foundation Post-Doctorate at The Sociological Institue of The University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 1975-1976.

Professor Suchar's published works and interest range from the study of deviant behavior and the sociology of mental illness to his interests in visual sociology and the study of changing urban communities. His latest publications include a book co-edited with J. Rury: DePaul: Centennial Essays and Images (Kendall-Hunt, 1998) [official institutional history of DePaul University]; "Judging the Adequacy of Shelter: A Case from Lincoln Park" (with R. Rotenberg); Journal of Architectural and Planning Research, 1994; "The Jordaan: Community Change and Gentrification in Amsterdam," Visual Sociology, 1993; and "Icons and Images of Gentrification: The Changed Material Culture of an Urban Community," published in R. Hutchinson's Gentrification and Urban Change: Research in Urban Sociology, Vol.2 pp. 165-192JAI Press Inc. (1992).
