| Welcome |
I have been a member of the political science faculty at DePaul since 1975. Teaching at DePaul was my first job after completing my doctorate at Ohio State and, aside from a one-year visiting appointment at Northwestern, it has been my only teaching job.
Within political science, my area of broad area of interest is international relations, with special interest in international ethics and U.S. foreign policy making. I teach courses on those topics. I also teach courses on the military dimension of world politics, the U.N., the impact of nuclear weapons on human history, and the introductory world politics class offered in the international studies program.
My book, The Logics of American Foreign Policy, was published last year. It describes the competing conceptions of the U.S. role in the world and their foundation in international relations theory. The six logics are: hegemonism, realism, isolationism, liberalism, liberal internationalism, and radical anti-imperialism.
In addition to teaching, advising, and doing some research, I have served three terms as chair of the political science department.
My main commitment in my life, though, has been my family. I have been married to the same woman, Joanne Callahan, since 1969. I have two daughters, both grown and married and living socially responsible lives, and one infant granddaughter, Athena. |
