DePaul Department of Physics

tenure track position

Job Description: The Department of Physics at DePaul University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin September 2008. We are seeking a physicist who is enthusiastic about teaching and is capable of establishing an on-campus research program that will involve both undergraduate and beginning-level graduate students. The department offers an undergraduate degree in physics, a master’s degree in physics, and a wide range of undergraduate courses for non-science majors. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and developing courses in all three of these areas, and must be willing and able to teach courses in appropriate interdisciplinary programs, such as the university’s first-year program. Current faculty research areas include material science, complex fluids, nonlinear optics, nonlinear dynamics, nuclear physics, astronomy, and astrophysics. Startup funds appropriate for establishing a research program at a teaching-oriented university are available. A Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field is required. Candidates should submit a teaching statement that describes their teaching experiences and interests (including courses for non-scientists, physics majors, and beginning-level graduate students, and a discussion of how their teaching will contribute to the educational mission of the department and university), a proposed research plan (including a description of how undergraduates will be involved in the research program), a curriculum vitae, an estimated startup budget, and arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to: Search Committee, Department of Physics, DePaul University, 2219 N. Kenmore Avenue, Chicago, IL 60614. Electronic applications will not be accepted. Applications received by November 16, 2007 will receive full consideration. DePaul University is a private urban university with a strong commitment to providing access to all to higher education regardless of class, race, ethnicity or economic barriers. Further information about the position, the department, and the university’s mission can be found at http://www.depaul.edu/~physics. DePaul University is an equal opportunity employer. Women and members of minority groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Additional Information:

Courses and Teaching: Physics faculty typically teach two courses per quarter, split roughly evenly between courses for majors and courses for non-majors, and including courses with a laboratory component. (Tenured and tenure-track faculty teach seven course equivalents each year, with lab courses counting 1.5 course equivalents each.) Major-field courses are split between the undergraduate degree program and the graduate degree program. Physics faculty teach courses for non-majors in the Scientific Inquiry Domain of the Liberal Studies Program and in one or more of the Focal Point, Chicago Quarter and Quantitative Reasoning components of DePaul's First Year Program. Teaching these Liberal Studies courses is integral to the mission of the department, and preference will be given to candidates that demonstrate the interest and ability to teach and develop courses in the Liberal Studies Program.

A complete list of courses taught by the department can be found here.

Research: Participation by undergraduate physics students in faculty research is an extremely important component of our program. Candidates are strongly encouraged to discuss the ways in which undergraduate students and beginning master's students can successfully contribute to the candidate's research program. Current Physics Department faculty members have received internal support from DePaul University, and external support from Research Corporation and the National Science Foundation REU program. Candidates should also include an estimated startup budget. While the total startup budget is not fixed, it will be closer to tens of thousands of dollars than hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The University Mission: Candidates are encouraged to discuss ways in which they might contribute the diversity of the Physics Department and to the mission of the university, through research, teaching or service. Additional information about the university may be found on the DePaul web-page.
