Programs and Careers
Experiential Learning Opportunities
The department strongly encourages students to study abroad in fulfilment of DePaul University's "Junior Year Experiential Learning" requirement. The department has developed community based service learning courses for Intermediate Spanish, but does not currently offer any internships or experiential learning courses in fulfilment of this requirement.
Secondary Education
In cooperation with the School of Education, the Department of Modern Languages offers a concentration of study which combines the requirements for a major in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish with certification for teaching the language at the K-12 levels. A student electing such a program should consult a School of Education counselor as soon as possible after entering DePaul. The requirements of this program typically include 12 or 13 courses in the language, at least seven of which must be from the 300-level. The 300 level courses must include FCH 350 for French majors, and SPN 352 for Spanish majors. Students must also take "MOL 349: Teaching Modern Languages" and one more course relevant to teaching languages:
Graduate study
The Department of Modern Languages provides strong preparation for students planning further study in graduate school. Recent DePaul graduates in Modern Languages have continued their education at major state universities and at prestigious private institutions, such as the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and John Hopkins University.
Careers
Language majors are not restricted to careers in any one field; knowledge of another language is now essential for success in many sectors of the business world, government service, and public administration. Recent DePaul graduates in Modern Languages have found employment in federal, state, and local government agencies; business, law, medicine, and education.
