2008-2009 Graduate
Assistantships
In spring the English Department will award a limited number of
graduate assistantships for the 2008-2009 academic year. Graduate
assistantships carry full tuition for up to eight graduate-level
courses taken for credit towards your degree during the 2008-2009
year and a stipend of $7,500, payable September through May. The
application deadline is February 29, 2008.
Graduate assistants are typically assigned to work in DePaul's
Writing Centers or to perform editorial or administrative duties
in support of the English Department, its publications, and its
programs. Assistantships require about 20 hours of work per week
at the Lincoln Park Campus during the fall, winter, and spring quarters.
Any student in the M.A. in English or the M.A. in Writing may apply
for an assistantship.
Applicants must submit the following:
1) a completed assistantship application form
2) a personal statement outlining your qualifications and goals
for an assistantship
3) three letters of recommendation from people who are familiar
with your academic work
4) an official transcript showing your Graduate Record Examination
(GRE) general test score

test locations and times, click on the GRE link above. Please select
a GRE test date that allows your scores to reach us by the deadline.
All application materials for graduate assistantships must reach
the English Department no later than Friday, February 29, 2008.
Note to students planning to begin
graduate study in the 2008 Fall Quarter. Application
to the M.A. in English or M.A. in Writing program is separate from
application for a graduate assistantship. To be eligible for an
assistantship for 2008-2009, you must first have been admitted to
either the M.A. in English or M.A. in Writing program by February
29, 2008. To ensure that your meet this admissions deadline, please
make sure that all application materials for the M.A. in English
or Writing reach the Liberal Arts and Sciences Graduate Office by
Friday, January 25, 2008 at the latest. Do not, however, wait to
hear a decision about admission to your M.A. program before sending
in your application and supporting materials for an assistantship.
Note to all students applying for
a graduate assistantship. Because your admissions
application to your M.A. program includes official transcripts from
colleges and universities you attended, you do not need to send
new transcripts. If you included official GRE transcripts with your
application for admission to your program, you do not need to send
new ones. Also, if letters of recommendation were included in your
original admission application, it is not necessary to send or have
those letters resent again; in these cases, you should fill out
recommendation-letter forms for each letter you have already submitted
and mark that the letter was included in your admissions materials.
If you have questions about admission to the MAE or MAW or about
applying for a graduate assistantship, please contact Mrs. Jan Flood,
Assistant Director of Graduate Programs in English, at 773 325-4635
or at jflood@depaul.edu.
