         Teaching Internships

Graduate students are eligible to apply for a teaching internship working alongside an experienced instructor at a local two-year college. Internships usually last one semester (about sixteen weeks). Intern duties vary according to the course and instructor: they include attending all classes, tutoring students, creating and presenting lessons, and designing and grading writing assignments. In addition, interns send e-journals regularly to Dr Goffman, develop a teaching portfolio, and write a final reflective essay that includes a statement of the intern’s philosophy of teaching. Interns will enroll in English 509 (permission needed) and receive four course credits.

Interested students are strongly urged to make an appointment with Dr Goffman before applying to discuss how the internship will fit the student’s academic program and career goals.

Applications for a two-year college teaching internship in Fall 2008 are due at 5 P.M. on May 9, 2008. Applications should be placed in Dr Goffman’s box in McGaw 255. Decisions about specific internship assignments will be made during the summer.

Please note:
Students may undertake an internship (and sign up for ENG 509) without being enrolled in the Certificate Program in Teaching English in the Two-Year College. However, with a little advance planning, many students find that the Certificate requirements can be easily incorporated into their graduate program.

Requirements for the Certificate are ENG 509 (internship), ENG 474 (Teaching Literature), ENG 480 (Teaching Writing), and one additional course selected in consultation with Dr Goffman. Applications for the Certificate Program are accepted at any time.
