The Organizing Committee, the Center for Black Diaspora and the Center for the Study of Race and Bioethics are pleased to announce an international conference on The Black Body: Imagining, Writing and (Re)Reading to be held at DePaul University, April 23-24, 2004. The conference will explore the ways in which the Black body has been constituted as a site for the construction and maintenance of social and political power. The conference will explore the changing discourse on the Black body, its production, policing, regulation, disfiguring, and the how different disciplines have been deployed to map, project and inscribe different symbolic meanings. In particular the conference seeks to advance scholarly interests in the significance of the Black body, how it is imagined, contested and (re)read polysemically.
