Text Box: Young Planners Spring into Action
Our conference room will be busy on weekends this spring as high-schools from around the region gather for day-long sessions to explore planning and development in the city. The newly created Leading Community Change program will give 30 students from four West-side high schools a chance to participate in a six-part educational series.
After an initial February gathering in West Garfield Park (pictured below), the students will be coming downtown, finishing their studies in June, when they will make presentations to the West Madison Advisory Task Force. “We’ve forged an excellent partnership with Bethel New Life, Inc. and the CPS Service-Learning Initiative on this effort.“ says Chaddick Program Manager Joe Kearney.

A group of students from the Back-of-the-Yards neighborhood will also join us for a separate week-long program in June.  All of these efforts are made possible by a generous gift from the Chaddick Foundation.

Text Box: Celebrating the Burnham Centennial
Chaddick is grateful for a $25,000 grant from the Chicago Community Trust allowing us to continue our involvement in the 2009 Burnham Centennial Initiative.  We look forward to expanding our support for the initiative and working closely with Chicago Metropolitan 2020, the project leader.  We thank Susan Aaron and Liz Wilp for their tireless work on this effort.

Text Box: From Blue Books to Green Plan
Chaddick is going green!  A growing number of graduate students are working on projects exploring the benefits and costs of emerging “green” technologies. In addition, more than ninety professionals gathered on campus last month for a workshop on green operations, procurement and building management. This event was sponsored jointly with ShoreBank, the City of Chicago’s Department of Environment and the Chicago Sustainable Business Alliance.

A dozen students are working to fulfill the requirements to become a Chaddick Scholar. Several are working with Professor Gloria Simo and Joe Schwieterman on graduate-level research projects.  All hope to celebrate the completion of their requirements at our end-of-year reception in June.
Several scholars stepped aboard our chartered mini-bus for a day-long “Mobile Workshop” exploring community development in the city, an event co-sponsored by the Public Services Graduate Program Alumni Association in December.
