In May of 1984 at Ohio State University, a group of undergraduate students, led by Dr. Josue Cruz, Assistant Vice Provost to the Office of Minority Affairs, began researching Greek-lettered organizations to learn how to begin a Latino[a] fraternity at the University.
After much work and dedication, thirteen men and women were officially initiated into Alpha Psi Lambda on March 10, 1985. These individuals set the foundation for what is now the nation's first and largest coed Latino-oriented fraternity. We will always recognize and honor the contribution that the founders of Alpha Psi Lambda have made toward the enrichment of the lives of both Latino/as and non Latinos/as alike.

Alpha Psi Lambda continues to grow each year. Our chapters now serve university and college campuses across the country. From its infancy, Alpha Psi Lambda has been a bright light, with a focus on the Latino[a] community, and a beacon for people to follow. The Latino culture is very rooted in family and support, therefore Alpha Psi Lambda, to its members, is more than just a fraternity. A-Psi creates a family support system based on brotherhood and sisterhood, at a time in a student's life when it is most important.
Although A-Psi is a Latino-oriented fraternity, Alpha Psi Lambda welcomes diversity. Members come from a broad spectrum of cultures. Our strength lies in our ability to focus on our Latina/o culture, without falling prey to a racist myopia. From Latin America to the Caribbean nations, Europe, Asia, and the United States, Alpha Psi Lambda is one family united! The rising Latino[a] population in this country has brought about a need for cultural awareness, cultural identity, and cross-cultural understanding. This means that there is an increased need for Alpha Psi Lambda. This necessity has been demonstrated by our growth. From small but noble beginnings in the middle of Ohio, Alpha Psi Lambda has grown to include chapters in Illinois, Texas, Indiana and Florida.

Alpha Psi Lambda, the first co-ed Latino[a] interest fraternity in the nation was founded in the spring of 1985 at Ohio State University. Eleven years later, in the Spring of 1996, an interest group developed at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. DePaul University consisted of a diverse student body. However, during the time that the interest group was developing, the Latino[a] population consisted of only 1336 students- 7.8% of the student body. Of those 1336 students, six aspired to bring the nobility of Alpha Psi Lambda to our university.
These six students strongly felt there was a lack of unity among Latino students at DePaul University. They saw a need for unity and leadership in order to support the aspirations and successes of future Latino[a] students at DePaul and within the city's Latino communities. The interest group felt that Alpha Psi Lambda could contribute to what was needed for the Latino[a] population at DePaul. By successfully establishing this network for themselves, they could carry others, no matter the gender nor ethnicity, upon their shoulders.
